Best Mushroom Coffee UK: How to Choose One That Is Worth It

En bref
The best mushroom coffee in the UK is the one that tells you what is in it and costs a fair price per cup. A seven-point checklist you can use on any brand, including ours.
The best mushroom coffee in the UK is the one that tells you exactly what is in each cup, uses the mushroom itself rather than grain-grown filler, and costs a fair price per serving. Taste matters too, but it is personal. Below is the checklist we would use to compare any brand. We make Mataye Mushroom Coffee, so at the end we score ourselves against the same list, weak points included.
The quick checklist
- Price per cup, not per bag
- Milligrams of each mushroom per serving, printed on the pack
- Fruiting body rather than mycelium on grain
- A caffeine figure, or at least the type and amount of coffee
- No added sugar, or a sweetener you are happy with
- A format you will actually use every morning
- UK delivery, a clear returns policy and real reviews
1. Price per cup, not per bag
Bags range from about £8 to £40, but they hold different numbers of servings, so the sticker price tells you little. Divide the price by the servings. For example, £25.99 for 30 servings is 87p a cup; £35 for 30 servings is £1.17; £15 for 10 servings is £1.50. Then compare that with what you spend on coffee now.
2. How much of each mushroom
Many blends list "mushroom blend 1000 mg" with no breakdown, so you cannot tell whether there is 900 mg of one mushroom and a pinch of the rest. Look for a figure per mushroom. If you are buying for one ingredient, such as lion's mane, check that it is listed with its own dose.
3. Fruiting body or mycelium
The fruiting body is the mushroom you would recognise. Mycelium is the root-like network, often grown on rice or oats, so part of the powder can be grain. The pack should say which one it uses. If it does not say, assume mycelium.
4. Caffeine: is it on the label?
Mushroom coffee has the caffeine of its coffee. Some brands print a figure, others only say "less caffeine". Robusta beans have roughly twice the caffeine of arabica, so the coffee type matters. If you are watching your intake, read how much caffeine is in mushroom coffee.
5. Sugar and sweeteners
Check the ingredients for sugar, coconut sugar or creamer powders. Some blends are sweetened with erythritol or stevia, which add almost no calories. If you take your coffee black and unsweetened, look for an unsweetened blend.
6. Taste and format
Instant is the easiest daily habit: a spoon, hot water or milk, done. Ground mushroom coffee needs a cafetière or filter. Pods and sachets cost more per cup. Most mushroom coffees taste like a smooth, slightly earthy instant coffee; with milk the difference is small.
7. UK delivery, returns and reviews
US brands can be pricey to ship and slow to arrive. Check delivery cost to the UK, whether unopened bags can be returned, and whether reviews are on a third-party platform rather than hand-picked quotes.

Is there a mushroom drink without coffee?
Yes. Mushroom cacao and "coffee alternative" blends use cacao, chicory or herbs instead of coffee and have little or no caffeine. Any product sold as mushroom coffee contains caffeine unless it says decaf.
Do mushroom supplements actually work?
Research on these mushrooms is real but early, mostly in labs and animals, with small human trials. No health claims are authorised for them in the UK. We go through it mushroom by mushroom in mushroom coffee benefits: what the evidence says. New to the category? Start with what is mushroom coffee.
